I love this song. It makes me feel very happy. Good stuff. He has clearly tried to emulate this song with several of his more recent tracks but nothing from him compares to this one for me. Some of the lyrics are pretty dumb (as are the lyrics in most of his tracks) but it's all harmless pop fluff complete with a guitar driven beat and hand claps, so typically what I like anyway. Een plaatje dat wel een voldoende op het bord krijgt maar toch niet direct veel meer dan dat. | |
Zijn stem lijkt soms verdacht veel op Justin Timberlake, ware het niet dat laatstgenoemde de laatste jaren muziek maakt van drie niveau's hoger. Aardig popplaatje maar geen doorbraak. | |
About 30 seconds in, I was thinking, "oh no, it appears we have another boring acoustic guitar song on our hands". Fortunately enough, it really picks up, but it isn't something I love at this moment. The "now I'm without your kisses/I'll be needing stitches" line is a little cringe-worthy to be honest. Still an alright song though. 3.25* EDIT: I have to say, this grew on me pretty quickly. After about 3 listens, I was hooked. One thing this song does, which songs of this variety don't usually tend to do, is that it really picks up, and actually gives me a positive feeling, despite the sadder lyrics (I guess sort-of in a way that Foster The People's "Pumped Up Kicks" does - I don't like this as much as that though). The aforementioned line is still a bit cringe-worthy, but I can overlook that for the most part, despite it containing the song's title. Terwijl Austin Mahone en Justin Bieber zo stoer en interessant mogelijk willen overkomen, maakt de Canadese tienerster Shawn Mendes, met een imago van doodgewone buurjongen, serieuze popmuziek in de stijl waar hij compleet achter staat. 'Stitches' klinkt een beetje alternatief, maar is tegelijkertijd een catchy en goed in elkaar stekende popsong die eindelijk in Nederland begint op te vallen. En terecht, want Mendes' muziek is een stuk beter dan die van Justin Bieber en Austin Mahone (om maar eens even iets op te noemen) en ik gun het Shawn het succes ook meer. En hij mag dan misschien iets te jong zijn, hij is toch een klein beetje mijn 'crush'. Haha, ik ben vast bevooroordeeld... | |

I love that this was his big breakthrough and not the tiresome 'Life Of The Party'. This has a great rhythm to it, it's quite akin to Passenger's 'Holes' in my opinion. This has some especially great vocal moments particularly in the chorus, and the bridge that builds up dramatically in the second half is a killer! A great effort overall. There's also some really nice plucky guitar sounds behind the main production in the chorus that stand out to me as great, they're not obvious, but once I noticed them, it enhanced the song just that little bit more for me. | |

I suppose my opinion of this has improved since the release of both "Treat You Better" and "Mercy" but I still don't think highly of it. I didn't like it to begin with and it didn't grow on me like I thought it might. Especially weird considering how much others liked it. His voice is not very pleasant to me and an issue I've had from the start. I also find the production unappealing and the track as a whole rather dull and it wasn't very catchy at first either. I can see the catchiness more now but I'm so sick of hearing that chorus that it's completely negated. Well done on getting a hit with something I never expected would do much, but it's not for me sorry. | |
